Like many people, I needed a cat photo for my personal blog. Of course I could use my own pets, but I’m most curious about the famous felines that are now all over the internet, and in particular social media. Don’t all cat owners these days think their beloved furry friends deserve their own accounts?
The glorious rise of furry faces adorning the internet really does come in every shape or form. We have famous cat models on Instagram, such as Grumpy Cat, Smoothie, and Lil Bub but to name a few; we have cat themed online stores, such as Catify.co, and we have endless cat memes and gifs dominating Google and other search engines.
But there’s more…
When internet pioneer Tim Berners-Lee was asked about what the biggest surprise was for him with regards to current online life, his response was… “Kittens”. This makes me smile.
Of course, dear readers, no one intended for the world to be completely dominated by cats… or did they?
Cat behaviour quite simply couldn’t be better placed for the intricacies of social media, a 6 second Vine clip, a Youtube compilation of cats jumping into boxes, entertaining cat stare memes, and much more. Other animals, by nature, don’t quite have the same quirky or, somewhat amusing surprise predator behaviours.
At this point of writing, both of my cats are comfortably nestled inside the material of the bottom of our sofa. God only knows how they managed to claw their way in there. Do I dare poke my head underneath for a “Hello”, and expose myself to potential surprise pouncing? Probably.
Back to cats winning the internet… let’s be honest and agree that the famous ‘I can haz cheeseburger’ cat meme was the best thing to ever land on the inter webs. There’s now even a whole site dedicated to this phrase.
That’s not the only phrase that has been integrated into normal human language. Not normal? OK, fine… crazy cat lady language. Said phrase would typically be used on the weekend, when asked out for a drink or other social gathering by a group of friends…
“Oh, I’ve got plans with my cat, it’s Caturday.”
That’s all folks!
